It is a hard job but somebody has got to do it. Your best friend is expecting you to make the best man speech. After hearing the sister of the bride cry through hers, everyone in the crowd is expecting an optimistic, funny speech from the best man. To make sure you are confident and make the most successful speech possible, follow these ten simple rules.
Try to be concise. Make it less than 1000 words or around 7 minutes. You don’t want to bore people you want to get them dancing. Your speech should include bits of humor, but does it have to include every detail? Think about the funny parts of the story, sometimes it’s best to leave things out. The speech should be entertaining to both sides of the family, as well as the guests who hardly know the couple. Don’t include more than one reminiscence or anecdote. Keep it interesting for everyone. Your speech should be mixed with congratulatory remarks as well as friendly digs about the groom. A good combination of funny and optimism is key. Never mention girlfriends of the past. Be sure to compliment the bride. Don’t be vulgar; refrain from cursing by all means. Try not to write it down, speak from the heart. If you must, memorize at least the first paragraph and look up and smile as much as you can. Always speak loud and slow enough for the crowd to respond. Pause between your jokes and give some time for people to fall off their bar stools laughing. Spend time finding the perfect ending remark. People remember this the longest, so make sure your closing flourishes.
