1. Don’t stand up and tell your audience how nervous you are. Everyone who has to say a few words in public is nervous. If you start talking about being nervous you frighten yourself even more.
2. Don’t stand up and say downright silly things like “Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking.” Sounds corny and it is.
3. Don’t put your hands in your pockets. It looks sloppy and conveys an ‘I really couldn’t be bothered’ message. Instead, keep your hands in a neutral position by your sides.
4. Don’t hold your notes in hands that are obviously trembling, you’ll frighten yourself to death. In this situation it’s best to put your notes on the table.
5. Don’t stand up to make your speech with only a glass of wine to hand. Best to have a full glass of water to hand as well and drink from it freely.
6. Don’t stand up and immediately tell a dirty joke – if you simply, absolutely, definitely must tell a dirty joke save it until the end of your speech and sit down immediately afterwards. In preference, why don’t you tell a genuinely funny joke like this:
A student comes to a young professor’s office after hours. She glances down the hall, closes his door, kneels pleadingly.
“I would do anything to pass this exam.”
She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully into his eyes.
“I mean…” she whispers, “…I would do… anything!!!”
He returns her gaze. “Anything???”
“Yes…Anything!!!”
His voice turns to a whisper. “Would you…study?”
7. Don’t stand up and say hurtful things at the expense of others like how the bridesmaid’s crimson dress matches the colour of her face. And no, we don’t want to know how many ex-girlfriends the groom has had before he met his bride. Who cares?
8. Don’t think that you are the funniest person in the room – you’re not! And don’t think that those jokes that you downloaded online for free from the free best man’s website are new to your audience. Just take my word for it; most of the lads will have heard them before, especially if they can be downloaded for free. By all means tell a joke – or two – but don’t tell a dozen
9. Don’t stand up without any notes at all. You may never actually need to read from them but it’s best to have carefully written notes, just in case. Write them on cards and – most important – number your cards. Cards can – and do – have a tendency to fall out of nervous hands.
10. Don’t walk around the room with a mike in your hands like a pro – unless you really are a pro. It’s hard to hold a mike correctly and it’s best to stay in one place when you are giving your speech.
11. Don’t gaze into space. Try and let your eyes look around in a friendly way at the people in the room. If you are too darn nervous to do this, ask somebody in advance for permission to look at them. It’s amazing how this will help you. Simple, but hugely effective.
12 Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you haven’t spoken for long enough and then ramble on and on and on saying silly things to try and make your speech last longer. As a general rule, people love short speeches and hate long speeches. Sit down. It’s best to be loved.
