Almost every culture around the world celebrates a wedding with some sort of sweet treat, but they are not all the same as the traditional American white tiered wedding cake. Incorporating the wedding cake tradition of another country can be a fantastic way to pay homage to your heritage, play up your wedding theme, or just surprise your guests with something a little different. Take a look at these international wedding cake customs for inspiration.
One of the most delightful wedding desserts is surely the croquembouche, the traditional French wedding confection. A tower of custard filled pastries is formed into a tall conical shape and then drizzled with caramel to hold it together. Unlike many American wedding cakes, the croquembouche is presented in its natural color, which is a light brown. No colored icings or vibrant decorations are used, although they do sometimes feature petite flower blossoms tucked into the tower here and there. A croquembouche would be a marvelous dessert for a bride or groom with French heritage. It would also make a spectacular addition to a reception Viennese hour, following a traditional tiered wedding cake.
Italian wedding cakes are usually one layer a large round puff pastry filled with vanilla crme. This would be a fabulous dessert for a bride and groom with Italian ancestry. This delicious crme filled pastry would also be a great centerpiece for a Viennese hour with an Italian flair. Surround it with other traditional Italian sweets such as cannoli, tiramisu, and bowls of Jordan almonds. Add in a coffee bar with fresh espresso and biscotti for the perfect sweet ending to any Italian wedding.
In England and Ireland, the wedding cakes do take on the tiered white frosted form which is most familiar to Americans, but with their own twists. Underneath the white frosting is usually a much richer cake than the white sponge cake often used in this country. In Ireland, newlyweds share an alcohol soaked fruitcake frosted in marzipan with their wedding guests. The most traditional wedding cake frosting in England is a stiff Royal icing (so named because it was first concocted to bear the weight of many heavy tiers on large Royal cakes).
There is a lovely wedding cake custom which originated in Victorian England which is still popular in parts of the world today, which is cake charms. In addition to its country of origins, the custom of placing small charms under the cake for guests to pull out is quite popular in Argentina and the American South. Each charm represents a future for the person who pulls it out, such as good fortune, travel, or next to marry. The small charms are on satin ribbons, and can be easily found online. Brides will often choose charms which coordinate with their bridal jewelry, so silver charms with silver or white gold jewelry, and gold toned charms when the bridal jewelry is gold. This is a very sweet custom which would be at home in any wedding, regardless of the bride and groom’s cultural heritage.
Tropical theme weddings are extremely popular, whether the newlyweds hail from the Caribbean or not. The ideal wedding cake for a destination wedding or a beach theme wedding at home is a lush rum cake. Enhance the theme with a white frosting with shaved coconut and tropical flowers for decorations. Your guests are sure to adore it!
The wedding cake is always one of the high points of any reception. Making your cake unique and personal is a great idea and will add to the character and charm of your special day.
