When planning a wedding ceremony, one of the most common questions wedding planners receive is, “How many songs do I need and where should they go?” The answer to that question varies simply because there is no wrong way to go. There are some guidelines to follow when placing music within a wedding ceremony. One sample program is included below.

Sample Wedding Ceremony Program

Prelude – For the prelude, you might select a pianist or perhaps a string quartet or flutist. The music played in the prelude is usually instrumental.

Processional – Whether you choose “Here Comes the Bride” or another accompaniment as you march down the aisle, your processional will announce your arrival. All in attendance will stand as you make your way toward the center point. The most common instrumentalists used for the processional are a pianist and organist. You could certainly opt for another instrument if you prefer. However, keep two things in mind. The instrument(s) need to be loud enough to hear. A flute would not be recommended. Also, if your wedding ceremony is indoors, be sure the instrument isn’t too loud, as it will make guests uncomfortable.

Poetry/Scripture Readings – If you choose to include this optional segment, you might consider having a soft instrumentalist playing in the background. A harpist, string quartet, organist or pianist would work well here. Most brides use the same instrumentalist who played during the prelude for the readings also.

Unity Candle/Soloist – A popular practice in a wedding ceremony is to light a unity candle. The bride’s parents and the groom’s parents each light separate candles. Then the bride takes one candle, the groom takes the other and they simultaneously light a new candle symbolizing the union of the two families.

Three scenarios have taken place during the unity candle lighting. Instrumentalists play softly in the background during the lighting or a soloist sings during the lighting. A third option is to have a gentle melody playing during the lighting and afterward have a soloist sing to the couple.

For those who choose not to light a unity candle, this section of the wedding ceremony is an excellent place for your soloist’s first song.

Vows – There are several places within the exchanging of vows where a soloist could sing a song. Before the vows, after the vows or before the rings are all practical and acceptable places for a soloist to sing.

Recessional – The part of the wedding ceremony you’ve been waiting for! Congratulations! You’re husband and wife. Of course, you’ll need music to leave by. The same principles apply to the recessional as did to the processional. All in attendance will stand as you make your way out of the gathering place. The most common instrumentalists used for the processional are a pianist and organist. If you choose another instrument, remember it needs to be loud enough to hear, but not loud enough to make guests uncomfortable.

Sample Wedding Reception Program

Your wedding reception will generally have some sort of entertainment. Typically, a wedding band or DJ will be used.

Arrival – Upon your arrival to the reception hall, the bandleader or DJ will announce you as man and wife.

Mingling – For the next few minutes, you and your groom will mix and mingle as you make your way to your reserved table. In order to alleviate feelings of awkwardness, music should be playing in the background.

Service of Food – At this point, if a formal meal is being served, it will generally take place now. If hors d’oeuvres are offered, guests and the bridal party will simply help themselves throughout the wedding reception. Throughout the meal, soft music should be playing.

First Dance – Obviously, you’ll want to select a special song for the band or DJ to play for your first dance. This is probably one of the most touching memories you’ll have of your wedding reception.

Best Man’s Toast – Just before the cutting of the cake, the best man will generally offer a toast to the couple. While no music is needed during the toast, your wedding band or DJ needs to be aware of the events, so they can stop and start the music as needed.

Cutting of the Cake – A fun and potentially dangerous portion of the wedding reception! Be gentle with one another. Don’t do anything you’ll regret later. As with the toast, no music is needed during this event.

Tossing of Bouquet – No music is played during the tossing of the bouquet or that of the garter.

Departure of Bride and Groom – As your friends and family gather to toss rose petals, rice or bird seed, or to blow bubbles, your special day will make way for a special life with your new mate.

How You Can Afford Live Music for Your Wedding

There is nothing more special than having musicians present to perform for your wedding and reception. Hiring musicians is not just about having wonderful music to accompany your wedding activities—it’s also about having a performance to watch. Your guests will certainly enjoy watching a musician performing rather than someone pushing the play button on an iPod stereo.

Conventional thought is that musicians will charge more than DJs. This is not necessarily the case. Here are some ways to get your musical talent for less:

· Invite musicians to play for several wedding elements

When you hire musicians to play for multiple hours, they may give you a price break for performing additional hours. Invite them to play for the ceremony AND the photo session afterwards. Or invite them to continue through cocktail hour. Or have your reception band play through dinner and then kick it up for dancing.

· Shave off some time

Your reception hall may want you to be finished by a certain time so that the staff can get in and clean up. Therefore, don’t instruct your reception band play until the very last guest leaves—instead, tell them to end a half hour before everyone needs to vacate the site. Bringing the music to an early close will give guests the signal that the party is at a close and it is time to throw the rice.

· Go with a smaller group

Obviously, if you hire a trio instead of a six-piece band, you’ll be saving some money.

· Hire musicians who can fit into your budget

Professional wedding musicians have large repertoires and know the elements of a wedding. They may also be familiar with the staff of your wedding venue and have strong working relationships with other service providers that you have hired (such as your celebrant and your wedding coordinator).

If you don’t have the budget for a professional, turn to student musicians. You will need to educate them about your expectations, and you won’t have as many musical choices to choose from, but you’ll save money. Find student musicians at local colleges and universities, or simply ask music teachers at your local full-service music store for recommendations.

· Be careful inviting friends and family members to perform for you

It’s absolutely wonderful when your professional musician friend volunteers to perform at your wedding as a gift to you. You won’t have to pay for the musician’s services, and the musician will welcome being a part of your special party.

It is an entirely different story if you ask an amateur musician friend or a close family member to perform at your wedding. You are putting that loved one on the spot—if they don’t want to perform, and then they feel they’ll risk hurting your feelings by turning you down. The solution: Invite amateur musician friends and loved ones to play a special song, during the reception, while you give your reception band a break. At the reception, people are partying and your friends will feel more relaxed performing. Save performances during the formal wedding ceremony for professionals or experienced musician friends who volunteer to perform for you.

· Provide amplification or nix it altogether

Some musicians and bands may offer you a discount if you provide the amplification, or house sound, for them. To make this happen, you will need to have on hand an experienced sound tech to take care of the musicians’ amplification needs. A plus for hiring a sound tech is that they can also mike your celebrant during the wedding service.

Or, trim your guest list so that amplification is not necessary. Some musicians will charge less if they don’t need to haul sound equipment to your wedding.

· Hire musicians in your geographical area

Travel is expensive, and importing musicians from many miles away is, too. They will pass along the price of their gas, lodging, and meals to you. When you hire local musicians, you won’t be paying that surcharge, and they are more likely to be familiar with your wedding venue.

· Change your date

Saturday evenings are prime time for weddings, and in many regions, June is the prime wedding month. To receive possible discounts on your entire wedding services, including live music, plan a wedding that is off-season (during November or January, for instance) or select a weekday wedding date.

Nuptial ceremonies in many cultures are a colorful affair marking a very special occasion. It varies from place to place with traditional colorful African chants and dances to Modern Mississauga or Toronto weddings with Toronto DJs or Mississauga DJs. For Toronto nuptials, instrumental or vocal music can be performed at rehearsal dinners, wedding rehearsals as well as receptions. The music can be either live or recorded and played by a professional wedding DJ.

For Jewish nuptials, the bride’s entrance is usually marked by a tune known as Baruch haba. After the ceremony a traditional dance known as hore is performed. This is a dance done in a circle where the men encircle the groom while the women encircle the bride. Siman Tov (‘Good Tidings’) is another common song sang in these ceremonies. It is an all round celebration song, sometimes sang at the end of the ceremony and most definitely during the reception. Modern Jewish Toronto weddings can have a wedding DJ.

Scottish nuptials often have music accompanied by some dances. Traditionally, after the ceremony, there’s a dance called ceilidh. This involves some traditional Scottish music with dances like ‘Dashing White Sergeant’, ‘Strip the Willow’, ‘The Gay Gordons’, and. ‘Mairi’s wedding’, also known as the ‘Lewis Bridal Song’ or ‘Mairi Bhan’. Wedding DJs can be included in today’s Scottish theme Toronto nuptials.

Hawaii is always associated to luxury coco palm beaches. Hawaiian nuptial music and songs therefore carry this theme. The most famous and favorite Hawaiian music is the ‘Hawaiian Wedding Song’, which Elvis Presley made famous in the ‘Blue Hawaii’ movie. Originally written by Charles E. King in Hawaiian, it was written in English lyrics by Mannin and Hoffman. Elvis mixed both, singing is to his bride during their wedding at the Coco Palms Resort. For Toronto weddings with Hawaiian wedding music, hire one or several DJs who will have several versions of the song. Hawaii has a wide range of musical styles and instruments. The slack key (a regional guitar style), the ukulele and steel guitar are popular musical instruments.

Egyptian weddings music is often a special rhythm called zaffa. A belly dancer traditionally leads the bride to the venue, followed by musicians playing elzaff on trumpets and drums and sometimes carrying flaming torches. Egyptian nuptial music is available for Toronto nuptials from many DJs who offer different music with Islamic, Greek or Roman themes all affiliated with Egypt.

Muslim wedding music is marked by traditional dances and songs to accompany Mehndi, a henna application ceremony, which also marks a ladies night out before the ceremony. Modern Islamic nuptials hire a band or wedding DJs to play the music as they dance along. Music is however strictly prohibited in strict Muslim ceremonies.

There are many available Toronto wedding services often affiliated with DJs to offer live or digital music for the perfect theme ceremony, be it a Scottish, Jewish, Egyptian, Muslim or Hawaiian Toronto wedding. The DJs are well equipped and trained to play the right music at the right place and time to give the wedding its authentic cultural feeling, leaving the guests happy and feeling at home.
